Salou – Where Old Spain Meets Tourism
Salou is located on the north-east coast of Spain in the province of Tarragona, which itself is part of Catalonia. Before we take a look at all the things to do in Salou, let’s have a little history lesson, just to give you a flavour of how old this region really is in terms of inhabitation and importance.
Salou, as a port, dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who both used the area for various reasons. The Kingdom of Majorca was actually founded back in the thirteenth century, when James I of Aragon sailed from the port of Salou to conquer the Balearic Islands. As you can see, the region has a long and storied history.
There are plenty of things to see and do for the visitor to Salou. Local festivals are held almost every month of the year, and there are many cultural and historic sites to visit in the area. The town has a wonderful landscaped promenade, and there are many beaches and secluded rocky coves up and down the coastline. The area’s biggest attraction is the Port Aventura resort, a massive theme park that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
Salou is well served by a local train station, local bus service, and many taxi ranks. The closest airport is in Reus, which is about a fifteen-minute drive away.
